We have an issue in our hotel.

So far I have noticed that 3 of our guest rooms ring when there is a new voice mail.

Is there an option to change it to only blink the light instead of ringing all day long?

Mitel SX-200 Digial (with analog cards)
Corporate Office v 8.5 (dos) voice mail

This is a COS issue in the MITEL. Someone been messing around in programming? Or are you the new guy and discovering stuff no one else noticed or cares about?
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/11/08 12:46 PM
He had an issue awhile ago.
Called a tech in to fix up our system. some extensions would transfer. After the only 2 guest rooms would ring like this (room 202 & 204) but just recently room 131 is now doing this.

We called the same tech in when the 2 would do this and paid him for 4 hours for him to tell us that he can't (or doesn't know how) to change that.

No one (other then a tech a couple of years ago) has been in this system.
I don't have any software to connect to the mitel,
Is there a way to do this from the phone or the front desk console?
Posted By: Dane Re: New message Rings - 06/11/08 12:49 PM
Yes you can do it from the console as long as you have the password to get into programming. Go to form 9 and find a room that is working correctly and note the number under the COS column header. Then go to the rooms that are ringing instead of flashing and change the number under the COS column heading to match the one from the correctly working room. If it is already the same then you have a problem with the phones themselves or the line card(s)

I've seen (heard) phones ring even tho COS says lights and it has been the phone. But normally they give a quiet ding-ding continiously. If it's a 2500 set, the ringer bias spring is either weak or not in the right place.
That said, I suspect you will find that the COS is wrong and the tech put it in that COS in an attempt to stop the transfer capability.
IF you know the password, AND have a modem on the Mitel, either Dane or myself (Or a lot of other Mitel certified techs) can modem in and take a look and fix the problem, IF it's a COS issue. I should state right here that it won't be free, at least if I do it. Cannot speak for others, but probably be true of them, as well.

I know that we dont have a dial in for our phone system.

I'll look into the folders of the system we have to see if it's written down there. When the company was closed they gave us all the info. But I do know the guy who installed the system so I can call him to see if he remembers.
Posted By: TECHarry Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 06:01 AM
This may not apply unless your hotel is still using older sets... Try reversing the polarity of the wires in the jack in the room. The ringers on some older phones (2500 sets and back) are polarity sensitive and will give a slight *ting* when the Mitel sends out the MW signal, which is just a brief burst of AC ring voltage. If it's only happening when the room has a voicemail, that could explain it.

We use these phones
Aegis 5 and T5

Do you have any ONS cards in the system (9109-010-xxx)??
One of the ports may be failing and randomly 'pulsing' other rooms, causing them to ring.
When the phones ring, are they 3 quick bursts, or a long ring cycle?
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 07:36 AM
No Joy,

I looked through the folder they left here and lucky for me they had the password written down.

I entered the CDE (I think) and choose form 09

I looked at several rooms, and found that the COS are all the same listed at 2

Am I to assume that the line card is bad for that section? Or could it be as simple as the phone is bad?

Fiftyfooter:
All of our line cards are: 9110-110
As for the ring, It rings just like a telephone call would be coming in. You can pick up the phone and hear dial tone. When you hang up the phone about 1-2 seconds later it will start to ring. If you check the voicemail and hang up the phone it wont ring like that until you get a new voice mail for that extension.
Posted By: Dane Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 08:17 AM
okay - then it is probably not the COS in the PBX - what kind of VMS do you have? Since the VMS is administering message waiting notification I'll bet those three mailboxes for the exts you are having problems with are out to "outdial notification to the extension" instead of lamp.
Posted By: Dane Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 08:18 AM
And yes, John C, I don't dial in for free. The mortgage company doesn't like me to do that.
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 08:30 AM
Our voice mail is:

Corporate Office 8.5
I believe that is made by Keyvoice

I've been in and out of that computer looking at all values in the programming there for each box. But they all look the same, Unless I'm missing a setting there.
Posted By: Dane Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 10:06 AM
Well, I am not familiar with that VMS. But unless the phones have a voltage switch under the faceplate (they say you have to pay an extra $14 per phone for voltage adjustment though it may be just a profit center) then it can only be the voice mail. However - that being said - try rolling a line card on one of the bad stations and see if it fixes the problem. With the old 110 cards bad relays could do some strange things.
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 10:33 AM
Now that you bring up the cards and bad relays
I have 3 bad cards, If I use one of those cards, when dialing the room number, it will simply hang up. Would those be the relays that are bad?

Also, I'm not aware of any voltage switches on the phones or in the walls. I've been here since the building opened.
I'll try moving a card this afternoon.

" I have 3 bad cards, If I use one of those cards, when dialing the room number, it will simply hang up. Would those be the relays that are bad?"

No, that's not going to make the phones ring, that is caused by a different part. (FYI that problem is generally described as a ring-trip.)

I suspect that Dane is correct. That is about the only semi-reasonable explanation. Do the rooms have the option of changing the notification to go to the customer's cell phone? And keep in mind that they may be able to and it was never explained to admin folks, altho enabled. If it can be done, then it probably was cancelled incorrectly by redirecting the call-out to the room extension. John C. (Not Garand)
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 11:21 AM
In the VMS computer the only section is the Pager. That is disabled for the guest rooms, I have been through every option on the caller side and the desk side and I can't find anything different..

Only thing that has chnaged, since I went into the console, looked at the info and backed out, In that section of rooms, no message indicator come on. It doesn't even ring anymore.

I have yet to swap a card but I'm starting to think it's the cards.
Posted By: Lightning horse Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 11:27 AM
Cards are hot swappable, so that's not a problem. If that doesn't work, there is always the system restart, especially if you guys have had some power flickers in the last few months, without pure outage that caused system to restart. John C. (Not Garand)
Posted By: BuzzStPoint Re: New message Rings - 06/12/08 11:35 AM
The power company has already told us we have "Dirty Power" so we get flickers about 2 times a month.

I jaut swapped the cards, From slot 3 to 4.
The extensions on card 3 now do not activate the Message light. But the 2 rooms in question do flash.

So From what I gather, we have 1 card thats bad. Rooms 202, 204, 203 and 131 are all problem areas and all on card 4.

Time to order some cards.

Anyone know where he can get refurbished line cards, with a 2 year warranty??????????

Can these line cards be repaired?
I have 3 extra cards just sitting because they failed.

If So, who would fix them?
Posted By: Lightning horse Re: New message Rings - 06/16/08 07:13 AM
Actually, to the best of my knowledge, no one repairs them any more. Trouble is, Mitel made literally hundreds of thousands of them, maybe millions, and they are surplus by the thousands! And no one is installing the equipment that uses them, anymore. I've got 20-30 of them, and no reseller wants them! They cost more to repair than to buy outright. Buy some with a guarantee, and be happy that they're so cheap. As I recall, new was around $1000, and refurb used to be $500. John C. (Not Garand)

Ok, it was a thought since I still had them in a box.

I don't know anyone that just repairs them anymore - don't even know of anyone that will take them on trade. It's just not worth the $$$

Thanks for playing along, John! Good to see someone has their eyes and ears open!!!

So was it concluded that the cards are bad? I have many of those cards and I will send it to you for free if you pay for shipping. AND the probable reason that these rooms ring is that there is one extension that is causing this problem. It is pulse dialing randomly. To find its source call forward the ringing extension to the console. When the console ring it will display the source and where it is call forwarded from.

Yeah, i swapped out the cards and the message lights came back on.

As for the cards.

Shoot me an email

That means only one things: you have a message. Internal or external it's a different story. I would take out all 9110 cards out except that one which lights up a MWL to eliminate any other cards.
If light still on I would put card by card back and use a code assigned in form 2 for option 42 as many times until I will hear a clicking noise. That will be the extension that start ringing. Means that extension left a message. The rest is easy.
