How can you connect your butt set to a pair in a 110 block to test for dial tone? I'm interested in quick and dirty methods, homemade adapters, and store-bought solutions.

I use a combination of two adapters. One is from Siemon's - an RJ-45 (female) to 110. They make quite a few varieties of this type. The one I've got is a TAP-110-A4 (568B wiring). The other is a Dracon "Banjo" RJ-45 Male (and a female) to clips. It's part # is 10230-000.

Personally I hate 110 blocks. I'd rather use 66 Blocks for voice anyday. Leave the 110 for data patch panels.

I'm with you Sam. 110's are a PITA as far as testing is concerned.

I've made a cable with Siemon's 1 pair field terminated connector S110P1, It cost about a buck fifty. Siemon

Quick and dirty is some scrap jumper wire.
if you all were using bix one of these would work!

Use one of these from graybar

It clips right on the 110 block
ttech is right on the money - that one has needles that will connect even if there is a jumper already in place on the 110 block, so you don't have to pull jumpers to test and then punch them back down.
Does bix allow for connection of an adapter if a jumper wire is in place?

Yes it does. The IDC slots are deep enough that the jumper is well out of the way and does not get in the way of the BIX clip.

That's where the tool in the pic above from Soyons-Expositifs comes in.

Just another reason......ah you know where I'm going....
oh and you can put the bix probe on adjacent pairs no problem, one day people will see the light!

Right on, those things are great. I have several of these kicking around, but I am sure that I never actually purchased one. Have you priced those bad boys out lately? I even included a pic of an older one in a recent trivia question thread that we had. They really are the only way to go, since you can use them on a position that already includes a jumper pair without having to lift it. Too bad that they don't make one for more than one pair.

Last time I checked they were about $30

I use a quick and dirty method as we try to avoid installing these blocks on voice lines for our clients so purchasing one of the tools for this hasn't really been rational.

The way I learned to do it is to just grab a 1 pair piece of cross connect wire, punch it down on the block without removing any wires in place, and the use the pins in the clamp of my test set to pierce the wires.

Works pretty well, some times you have to press a little harder on the test set clamps to get em to clamp well, but you can get a lot of tests out of some cross connect wire that you were going to throw away anyway.

What if, you have a wire on terminal prior ?

You double punch ? I hope not.

If so, your in trouble. :nono:
What happens if you double punch does it stretch out the post? and I see some AT&T techs with these little 110 test adapters that clamp right on to the 110 blocks, I always wanted one. Does anyone know where you can get one for 30 bucks like ttech said they cost. I cant find it anywhere for that price

Try Siemon's S110 adapters

If you take a look at the illustration above, you will see the comcode listed for both versions. Graybar should be able to cross-reference this for you.

The AT-8662 has been discontinued
but, they had two of the AT-8662d in the Atlanta
Graybar. Got both of them.Since I have used of these before and they are the best.
Fast and cheapest, get 3 feet of 23AWG CAT6 and pull out a pair, strip about 2" off of one end and enough on the other end to wrap around your test leads. Go off hook on your set and lightly push the stripped conductors down ever so slightly to pull dialtone (over an existing jumper).

If you have C4's or C5's without jumpers 24AWG will work fine, but if you have an existing jumper that's 24AWG then use a 23AWG test wire because the pins are already spread and this one will make better contact.

I made a custom cord for my butt set awhile back. Here is the link. You could easliy replace the RJ11 with a 110 connector.
