Hey there,
I have been given a Samsung DCS Compact II for my home office.
It has four cards installed: x2 8DLI, x1 8SLI, and x1 6TRK.
I have it wired up to a MDF and it is *almost* perfect.
All the digital phones work, all the single line phones work, and I can access the outside lines, however that is where there is one huge problem.
The outside line cannot hear anything past the phone system.
If I was to call one of my landline numbers from my mobile, all I would hear is silence. No clicking from putting the phone down or on hold, no hiss, nothing.
Likewise, if I try to dial a number using DTMF on the system, the tones never make it to the outside line!
I have no reason to believe I have wired it incorrectly (this is my first attempt however so could easily be proven wrong right now)
I have never set up a phone system before, and I am aware how old the system is however I need a whole home solution for multiple lines.
Thanks in advance!

Someone has to know!! smile

Unfortunately the Compact 2 may be a little different from what we had here the DCS50Si.Do you get dialtone from the outside line when you press a trunk key? Essentially they ca't hear you and you can't hear them? The only suggestion I have is to run a sli port into a trunk port and call the sli port from a digital phone .See if the trunk rings in and you have audio.Or pick up the trunk port connected to the sli port which should get you internal dialtone and call a digital set or another sli port and see if there is audio. That only eliminates the outside trunks as a culprit. You may very well have a bad 6TRK card.
Did you do a default and reset when you first installed it? Set the correct country code?

I do get a dial tone on all the trunks - if I try and dial using DTMF, it never reaches the outside line!
Almost - they can't hear me, but I *CAN* hear them.
I have already tried that actually (just retried it to make sure) and if I plug a single line phone into the trunk port, nothing happens on either the single line or the digital phone. No audio from either of them.
On the single line ports, they are wired identically to the trunks and they all work perfectly - so I am not sure if it is my wiring or not.
I am in the UK and I am aware that our phones use pins 2&5 - not sure if that has something to do with it.
I did suspect the card to be the problem, was waiting for someone else's opinion.
I got the system from a workplace environment. When it was taken out, it was working. The 6TRK card was already installed. I have factory reset it and ensured it is set to the correct country, still no luck.
Any other ideas?

I'm assuming you are in the UK .Is there any issues there with the trunk polarity?
I wasn't saying plug a single line phone into the trunk port but plug a single line port into a trunk port to give the trunk port dailtone. Then pick up that trunk and see what happens when you call a digital or single line extension.
I assume you can call between extensions and everything works fine for audio both ways?

Yes I am in the UK.
Ah sorry, just tried that and it has the same results. The internal line can hear the external line but the external line cannot hear the internal.
One thing I did notice, if I blow into the mic on the internal line, although I don't hear any sound such as that on the external line, I do hear crackling.
And yes, all the extensions work fine both ways, it is just the external line.

Well it sounds like a bad trunk card.Have you tried all 6 trunk ports to rule out a bad port or 2?Maybe try swapping the trunk card to a different slot in the cabinet?

You sir, are a genius. Just as I was specking up replacement system as well smile
Tried moving it from the expansion cabinet into the main cabinet and it works a treat laugh
One final problem (which I can live with) is that caller ID does not appear to work. I thought the 6TRK card had caller ID on it? Any ideas? Or shall I start a new post? smile
Thanks again for your help!! laugh

I agree with pvj either that or you have wired up the trunks wrong
Have you tried with a simple telephone across the linss to see if you can dial and receive calls

That's great news.
Caller ID has to be enabled on a per trunk and per station basis.
Here it would be mmc 414 for the trunks and mmc 312 for the stations as well as 119 for choice of name or number first.
Your program numbers may be different but I'm sure you can find them.

Think your find caller id don't work in uk on compact 2 unless its isdn2e

I checked MMC 312 and 119 and Caller ID is both enabled and set to display the number first. It was set to that as default, so I have not changed it.
As for MMC 414, excuse my ignorance but I don't understand what that one does. The programming manual I am reading says the default is none, however all the trunks are set to MPD. I have not changed it, as I would like to find out more first (and to make sure I am even in the right place!)
The programming manual I am reading says PRS is not available in the UK.
Any ideas?
Thanks for all your help!

cli does not work on analoge trunks in uk using compact 2
Posted By: tdw42 Re: DCS Compact II no sound on external line - 04/29/13 12:52 AM
In the UK 414 is PRS/MPD selection, 425 is CID trunks - however the CID format used in the UK wasn't supported on old systems (Compact II, DCS816, etc.), it wasn't even supported on the current Officeserv systems until v4.30 firmware.

As the trunk card works in the main, but not the expansion, chassis and the system was previously working the most likely cause is a bad/broken connection on the connectors or ribbon cable between the two chassis.

Damn! Do you know of any firmware upgrades for it? Or is there possibly some sort of converter box to make it supported?

As for the expansion cabinet, the plan was I was going to remove it once I got it working anyway! Worked out quite nicely smile

Only thing you can do is change analoge lines to istn 2
and change the line card

I am actually using a Cisco SIP Gateway with two of my lines, I found in the regional tab that I can change the caller ID method.
By default, it is set to Bellcore. I haven't actually checked that line to see if caller ID works, but can anyone tell me what types of caller ID the DCS Compact II will work with?
Thanks again for everyone's help! smile

The compact 2 we have (Sold as a DCS70) required 2 things for CID on PSTN lines.

1 - Misc card (Doesn't matter whether it's a MISC1 or MISC2 card)
2 - A 6trk card from the DCS816 (AKA DCS24/DX816/DX616 here), the 3trk and 6trk cards for the comapact 2 don't support CID, whereas the 4trk and 6trk from the 816 do.

The 6trk from the 816 has 6trk cid on 1 of the white tabs, whereas the compact 2 card just says 6trk
Can't remember if this card was supported by all versions of software or not (I know 6.33 and higher definitely support it)

Our CID is ETSI FSK if that is an option on your sip ATA

Sorted! laugh
Set the SIP Gateway to ETSI FSK and caller ID works perfectly!!
Thank you to everyone who replied and helped me get this working!
