Just got my first DX-120. Nice sets. Looks pretty cool.
Yeah, they look pretty good, way better than before. This is something that (in looks anyway) could compete with most of the newer systems out there. Hey, and the addition of the T-1/PRI card and the port expansion option for the voice mail (from 4 up to 8 ports) this product becomes even more attractive. I especially like the up-grade potential since all of the old cards, voice mail, and phones will work on it.
Steve
I got one bid out for one with a PRI VM and 24 sets price comes in nice. I downloaded all the manuals and sales tools today. Hope to work on the traing program Friday. The compatibility is really nice.
Do you know why the part number & price guide says that you have to order handset cords and handsets directly from Comdial? Do they have some funky handset connection to the phone?
Mark
The handset plastics are proprietary. The handset cords are just your run of the mill charcoal color. Normal hookups.
Good. Thanks. I'm anxious to see how difficult the PRI is to set up. I've never done one. They are not prominent around here yet. Mostly the clec breaks out the dial tone from a fractional T-1
Mark
You will need an external CSU to go between the network interface and the ISDN PRI card. The programming looks pretty simple. Call if you need assistance with the setup.
An EXTERNAL CSU?? Really???!!! That adds a decent amount to the price, doesn't it? On the plus side, it gives the carrier something they can actually loop up!
ACE CSU is pretty inexpensive. But you're right about not having to educate carrier techs about different loop back methods.
Rest of the stuff looks pretty cool. Sold the first one today...first day out of the gate. Gotta like that.
Does it use the same programming interface? What FW version are they starting with?
How is that different from the DX80? They put in a CSU and break out dial tone that I connect as loop start lines? What purpose does the PRI Card serve if a CSU is still required? I'm confused.
Mark
CSU is only a demarcation/loop/protection point, as I understand it. You are referring to a channel bank, which usually also has a built-in CSU.
Then I need info on the CSU I should have priced into my proposal, maybe you could PM me the one you would use?
The DX120 uses a PCDBA like the 80, it's available on CCC I downloaded it today but didn't look at it. I don't know about the firmware but everything is backward compatable according to the paperwork from the mothership.
Mark
Uses a new PCDBA DX-120 interface. FW17.
Mark- the circuit plugs into the CSU then plugs into the PRI card. It is just a repeater/loop point for the telcos. The two wire circuit then breaks down into 23 talk (B) channels on the circuit card. All signalling is done through the 24th (D) channel.
I may be going thru the DX120 correspondence course. Has anyone done it? Is it worth going thru?
Justin..I pulled the KSU out, loaded the new software and logged in and programmed it. Feels like a DX80 except some numbering changed. No 740 for line 1..now 800 and up. I'll take the course and certify on the product but it's pretty straight forward. This should fly off the shelf if it doesn't have too many rev 1 bugs.
I downloaded it today and I plan on doing it Friday. They just put it up on the 24th so I doubt anyone has completed it yet.
Mark
We should get a couple cases of beer and all do it together :toast:
I'd be interested in info on what CSU you use, Dave. Would you mind sending me the info as well? Thanks!

What are you going to drink? A couple of cases is an appetizer in Texas.
I'll bring my own Scotch.
Thanks!
I just glanced over some of the documentation. I was looking for a picture of the "dual density" DPM16. I get the impression it's still got a modular connection, and I'm guessing they are now doing 2 ports per connector, to get it to fit? If that's the case, I hope Express is working on a redesign for the DX120.
I don't know why they haven't gone to amp connectors, the mod arrangement can't possibly be less costly. I usually make my own express type cables for the 80. Express is overpriced and I never seem to have enough of them in stock. I get my 7th grade son to make them for 5 bucks each. A little heat shrink, some connectors, he's getting pretty good at it.
Mark
We used to do that, before we found Express. They are still much cheaper than the Siemon Hydra cables that Comdial had originally recommended, and we now stock the Express cables, so we always have plenty. Kinda a generic cable, but it does the job, and is a lot faster than having to make a cable each time.
I agree on the amp. You would think they would have done that this second time around. Instead, they just made a bigger opening for our fat fingers to plug in the mods. I guess we should just be thankful they did that!
I'm guessing the "new" cabinet isn't any better ventilated? I've been leaving the lids a little loose and pulled out to the edge of the screws, to allow for better ventilation.
I can't wait to work on a DX120. I like working on new offerings, even if they are close to their predecessor.
let's hope rev 1.0 is a charm.
Out of curiosity, are the handsets the same as the DX-80 handsets or did they change them?
They changed. They are a charcoal matte finish and different shape.
Bummer.. I finally get a decent source for DX-80 handsets and they change em....

Could you please PM me as well with the CSU that you use?
Thanks!
Rather be,
When you are dialing out,is it as sluggish as it was with DX-80?
We put in 3 DX120s last week and had zero complaints from endusers. Better quality speakerphone, fast dialing, a much better product. The only complaint was from the installers that say it takes a little getting used to if you program from the set instead of a laptop. Evidently the DX80 display would fast scroll when going the parameters and the new ones blank out for a brief time when fast running through the fields. It makes them slow down to make sure where they are in the programming tree.
I have installed 2 systems with Pri card it has the CSU on the card you dont have to buy one woorks good DID's are easy to set up
CSU is NOT on the DX120 PRI card. An external one would be required.
Justin
Do you have a fractional PRI with internet? If so the Adtran (or equivalent) takes the place of a customer provided CSU.
I have yet to install one where the CLEC hasn't provided one.
Some operating companies have smartjacks that don't require a CSU. Check before you purchase one.
