I was at one of our satellite offices yesterday doing some programming when I found a Call Classifier board on the shelf next to the Legend. It has a Lucent (ATT) code of 517A16 (I think) on it. What is this card used for. Never seen one before or heard of one. I always thought they were for the Definity switches.

Merlinman?

It seems to be some kind of Merlin II device. Here is the AT&T part number:

105496798

I tried searching AT&T 105496798, Lucent 105496798 and Avaya 105496798, but almost nothing returned.

I do remember that there was such a thing.

But alas, 18 Years or so after I supported the Merlin II, I just can not remember.

There is a device for the Definity that's called a "CALL CLASSIFIER", and it's description can be found here:

https://www.1pbx.com/phone-system/Definity-TN-744D-Call-Classifier-TN44D.html

Considering the Part Number is 517A16, the "517" Part means it will fit a 511 (MERLIN II & LEGEND) back plane, the "A" part means it's the first (and probably LAST) version of the module and the "16" means it's real function. (i.e.; 17 = T1)

Since you said it is "on the shelf", LEAVE IT THERE. (Or send it to me for my MERLIN II Museum)

I am sure it is one of those wonderful Bell Labs Inventions that never quite got off the ground, like most of the BRI modules that were made.

Yes there was. It was a mod adjunct It had to be merlin II.. Merlin II did not last long for a bunch of reasons. Who is going to pay techs 25 years ago 27.00 dollars an hr to support the crap they sold?

If you are lucky you get that without retirement from Macdonald's restaurant. America at it's best or should call worst..

Someone asked the question if the government was listening to phone calls. Yes they are since the breakup of the bell system. This is fact.

My Bad: "(i.e.; 17 = T1)" - should be:
(1.e.;15 = T1.(

The Merlin II was short lived 'cause Bell Labs only put it out while they developed the LEGEND.

The Merlin II was just an upgrade to the feature limited 1030/3070 old Merlin System.

It was way too small and limited itself to compete with what was out there at the time.

But as far as the Merlin II itself, I am still seeing them in service after all these years. Of course, the processor battery goes, and then BINGO, you may now upgrade a LEGEND.

Thanks for the responses all. Next time I'm over there, I will snap a pic and post it here. Maybe after seeing it someone's memory might recall. It's just sitting on the shelf with some older Merlin II packs (408s, etc) that were pulled for MLXs when we upped to Legend. They are backups since there is still some ATL sets on the switch.

Comcode 105496798 comes back as OCM CALL CLASSIFIER CARD 517A1. Is it a 517A1 or 517A16? Is there a typo here somewhere?

SuperTech:

It is indeed a 517A16. The label on the card says "CC04 - Call Classifier 4 Channels"
It has the three LEDs you would see on a 100D or 800 BRI card. No physical ports on the card, just the LEDs.
