i reinstalled an sts system for a customer last week. when i opened the cabinet the voicemail card was in slot 6. it was working. i always put it in slot 7. how is it possible for it to work in slot six. thanks dave

Slot 7 is programmed by default but any slot will work as long as it gets programmed and extensions put in a voice mail group. Slot 7 can be used as a co/pri card slot.

that would explain it. i didnt know you could do that. no chance you could make a port change from station to co to have 3 co cards is there.

Nope, the card slots are not universal. Cos go into certain ones, DTIBS in certain ones as well. The voice mail card can be moved to a CO slot, as you know but it acts more like a CO card with built in extensions.
