This is just plain sad. The folks who brought us transistors, laser, and a whole bunch of other stuff are being shut down. Alcatel-Lucent is shedding R&D in favor of more marketable (read: Money making) ideas.

Sad, yes! But I was doomed in ’82.

This truly is sad. I cannot imagine where we would be today had it not been for Bell Labs. Does anyone remember those science kits that they used to donate to schools where each kid got their own project, kind of like an electronic "Happy Meal"? I remember the one where you actually made you own solar cell and could see it generating electricity.

How about their "telephone courtesy training kits"? Remember how there were two 500 sets with a controller between them so that the teacher could ring either phone and connect us in an effort to speak properly on the phone? Southern Bell would send a rep to our schools to conduct a class in general telephone use and courtesy. Not today. It's just "hallow" or "wut up".

Can you imagine if Verizon offered this today? The class would largely consist of how loud and rudely you can speak on your cell phone in a public location or texting while driving at 85 MPH....

It is truly a sad day indeed.

Several months ago, "Telephony" featured an article on Bell Labs. It looked back on the organization's past and what the future might hold for it. The article reported that Alcatel/Lucent was considering pointing Bell Labs towards product development.
