TRUE, but in that environment do this:
Get a Viking PA2A, ditch the speaker. Interface the analog port to line 6 on the PA2A. Behind terminals 1 and 2 (need to remove circuit board from cover to see this) you will have two solder points that provide 12 Volts DC on a ring cycle.
You will interface that 12 volts DC to spare pairs strategically placed on work station jacks throughout the area that needs to hear this different sound.
You will then install a Piezo ringer (Radio Shack Item) (cheap)

I think this solution (which I have used on other systems) will work.
