I am only familiar with WE key set nomenclature, so please forgive this telephonic xenophobe.

Can anyone tell me if a Stromberg-Carlson 6-button phone, model 579, is electrically equivalent to a WE 565 or similar set?

Thanks!

Arthur -

Stromberg 6 button sets, As I Recall were in the 1800 series. Unlike ITT sets they did NOT resemble the Weco 565 series phones, but they were fully compatible (They did have a neat extra - an Intercom path when all the line keys were up).

I don't remember the 579 model off hand. Could it be one of those 3 Line KSU-Less phones with mechanical hold (Hold Line1, Line 1, Hold Line 2, Line 2, Hold Line 3, Line 3)?

Stromberg was bought out by Comdial and then there was Maxcom involved sopmeplace and the part number and design of the phones changed, but I'll have to look when I go home.

Do you have any pictures of the set?

Sam

The S/C sets were 1800 Rotary/2800 DTMF. I can't find anything on a 579. Comdial KV's were 3564.

Where did you hear about it?

ebay model 579 SC telephones

The seller says:

Hello, thank you for your email. The numbers stamped at the bottom are 579R, the mounting cords on the phones, one is gray the other green. Thank you.

Wow, those are beautiful phones! Bet the 579R means 5 of 79 refurbished! What is molded into the handset? Which pretty much doesn't matter, does it. Those have got to be rebuilts from some repair center, in all likelyhood, NOT SC OR WE! John C.

I think that they are 565 equivalents. I agree that the "579" is a refurbishing date. The cords look fat enough to be 565's and not 564's. I think you are safe with regard to compatibility.

More than likely, they are US Government issue units. They might be configured for 4-wire circuits, but they can be field-modified with a few wire changes.

That's what I guess the 579 means. As usual, the seller is incapable of answering the questions, or even photographing the boxes, base, etc. So it's all a guessing game.

The Stromberg sets I remember and worked with for years dod NOT resemble those sets at all.

I'll try to get a picture for you. The line keys ran vertically down the left side of the set and the handset sat on a cradle (2 metal arms).

Those certainly look like WE or ITT sets. They might have Stromberg handsets.

If S/C came out with 565 type sets later, someone please fill me in.

Sam

Sam, I know what type you mean. We called them baby call directors.

I suspect that these are ITT with SC handsets, as you say.

I need a green cord to complete an old WE key set that I'm restoring, and I don't want to have a satin silver one painted. That's what atracted my attention to these...the 25-pair cord in -51.
