Does anyone know any guidelines for the placement of a KSU? Specifically, is it OK to put them in a basement? Are they affected by moisture, heat, cold? I am talking about the 551 and 601 series KSU. Thanks

Bill

There's a recent post in CABLING called something like "Reusing 25 pair for an Avaya system".

There are pictures of a 501 KSU that was installed and ran 40 years mounted in a basement.

Mine (also a 501) has been in and working for 28 years in a basement.

I was never crazy about 601s - I never liked the interruptor. If it wouldn't last 40 years, it wasn't worthy of being called 1A2.

The 551 was OK but you needed an external ring generator.

Basements are fine though. Don't put it under a pipe that sweats or on an outside wall (unless it's well insulated) and you'll be OK.

Truth, I've seen a WECO 1A2, the model with the hinged door, that had the diagonal cabinet split, with cured concrete IN it. And yes, it worked just fine thank you! Couldn't move the door, it was open when the concrete hit the cabinet. And you could see 400 card edges and part of the interrupter, but there was no way there was going to be any maintanence in that cabinet. Yes, of course it was a concrete plant. John C.
