Quick question - I've been outbid, and pretty much have shot my budget for this month anyway. But I'll bid again.... before I do though, is the battery required readily available, and is it less than the cost of the meter?
Thanks - Matt

Matt: You need to start using Auction Sniper for this stuff. The minute that you place a bid, you let others know that someone is interested. Let it snipe what appears to be a dead listing for you. If you need the details on how to use it, just let me know. Oh and YES, Mike Sandman ( www.sandman.com ) sells the battery. Go on his site first and find out what he's getting for them and then determine what you can afford to bid on the meter itself.

A typical VOM will not have enough battery voltage or will it have a reverse key that allows ballistic tests. Having a kick meter AND a digital VOM is a good idea, though.

Wow. Mike responded to email in about 10 minutes.
"Part number TOH5L is $34.95 plus shipping. Part number TOH5N is a conversion kit that lets you use regular 9V batteries. $47.95 (with the batteries)."
I'm thinking of just going with the TOH5L. Not because of the price, just because that's what it was designed for, and I'm guessing with my usage patterns, I'll replace the battery about once a year, if that. Any feedback on this idea is welcome (I know it doesn't make financial sense).
So, off for another bid.
Thx Matt

Matt, I quit fixing radios and TVs 25 years ago, but I still occasionally buy repair equipment I'll probably never use. I bought a 2-channel HP oscilloscope 6 months ago, and then went out and bought new probes for it. And I bought it knowing full well that only 1 channel works! That said, based on your usage expectations for the kick meter, it'll be shelf life, not usage, that will kill the battery! John C. (Not Garand)

Lightning -
Yep, agree completely. So in that light, I'd be better off with the 9 volts, vs. needing to use it and finding a dead battery.
Decisions... decisions.....
Thanks Matt

Sam, I found a really simple to understand (fortunately for me!) explanation from a '98 issue of "Singing Wires" when I 'dogpiled' "Phantom Circuit". (I got hooked on "dogpile" 10 years ago when it found 10 times as much about an obscure subject as "google" did.) The article went a little bit further, mentioning "Ghost" and "Wraith" circuits, that are created from mutiple phantom circuits. WHAT A NIGHTMARE those would be to troubleshoot! John C. (Not Garand)

John-
"WHAT A NIGHTMARE those would be to troubleshoot"
I never worked on any, but so I've heard from the old timers.
