Has anybody had any experience good or bad using Skype gateways connected to traditional pbx's?

No experience with skype, but vonage boxes. Watch out for CPC signaling or you will get some odd stuff going on with the ATA lines. I.e. they don't like to release.
Some VOIP providers can turn CPC on, but you will need to argue with them for hours to do so.

Yes we have a VoSKY VIS8 connected to an ESI and Avaya IP office.
Works great, No CPC issues.
