Thanks for those who reply in advance.

What is a good way to test for the proper voltage/current on a poe voip system?

Sometimes we use the cpe cisco switches. Other times we will use a poe switch or single poe ac adapter.

Power is suppose to be on pins 4,5 and 7,8. It is hard to test with a vom.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Have you tried using one of the Siemon Breakout boxes (banjo or frisbee)?

I don't find the banjo listed on their website, but the "frisbee" is below:

It makes VOM testing a snap.

Listen to Sam.

The MODAPT works great. I would be lost without mine.

Well, a quick google of "poe tester" comes back with this:

Keep in mind also that most POE switches know when a POE device is connected to a port and will turn on the power. The port is otherwise unpowered and can be used just like a regular switch.

So I suspect using a banjo will not give you power unless you have a POE device plugged into the other side. Of course something like Tommy found is is the way to go.

A midpoint will just toss power on the line, but most switches (at least 802.3af compliant) have to detect that there is a PoE device present.

Your best bet is like what Tommy found.

The modapt can be placed in series with your device - it's got jacks on either end so you can hook up and test a working unit.

Blackbox Net Power. Will simulate various POE loads to make sure everything is up to snuff. I wasn't sure if I could put up a link to the manufacturer, as it goes to a pricing page.
