The manual online says that it requires the data pair, I will try it with it then without.

The manual says not to disconnect the data pair amidst a call, it will have the system drop all outside calls.

It's definitely a two-pair system, in fact power is introduced to the sets between the pairs using transformers. The phones will not work using only one pair.

Mark wasn't questioning the use of 2 pairs. He wasn't sure about calls being dropped when you unplug an adjacent phone. As Ed states it needs 2 pair.

Oh okay smile Thanks for the reponse.

I eagerly await the arrival of 6414 phones to try this puppy out.

I printed the manual out and have/will be reading it.

The 616x and 816x is a straight 16 station box with straightforward cabling. The data mates are the even and the next higher pairs 10-11 12-13 etc, and the power mates are the even/odd pairs 10,12-11,13-14,16,15,17.

The 1432B IIRC was the first switch to use adjunct pairs (for DSS consoles) on 10-13. I think later the E80PT (2000) added more adjucts at 42-45.

You can run a phone on 1 1/2 pairs :-) since power is simplexed between voice and data. The characteristic buzz with the phone functional will tell you this fact. That is also the neat thing about Comdial troubleshooting. All it took was a meter to read Tip to the two Data pairs and Ring to the two data pairs. If you didn't get 36 or so volts it wasn't going to work.

I agree with Ed, the Exec's are among the few cabinets made 100% in the U.S.A., and there is something to be said about that. No wonder I have some Exec's in service going on 15 years now, and the cabinets work the same as the day you first power it up! They are incredibly tolerant to power surges and wiring faults.

After reading the manual the system is capable of a lot more than I thought it would be. It has paging, voice call, intercom, hold, etc. It even allows you to change the telco ports to dedicated aux ports. That is neat.

Yeah, I like the ability to change the CO ports to AUX so that if one is used for paging access, it can't be put on hold. Very handy feature that many systems even today lack. Just remember that voice calling on intercom is one-way for the 3503, 3508 and 6414 models. You'll need speakerphones, mmodel 3593, 3598 or 6414S to have hands-free answer back.

Ahh okay. So the 6414, 3508, and 3503 models do not have internal speakers to recieve pages?
