I'm working on a HP Pavillion XL768 computer that I want to give to my mom. It was loaded with Windows ME when I got it but I upgraded to XP Pro while I had the machine running yesterday.

When I tried to start the machine the first time I kept getting the OS not found error.
The first time I went into setup it did not detect any hard drives at all.
For some reason the CD rom's were plugged into the primary IDE port and the Hard drive was in the secondary port.
I rearranged them so the hard drive was the primary.

Still got the error but the system did detect the hard drive.

I installed the hard drive in another computer and it worked like it should.

I unplugged everything from the mother board.
I think the processor was not fully seated in the plug but I'm sure it was when I put it back in.

The system booted up and ran fine for an hour or so.
That's when I installed XP Pro with a clean install.
All was fine for another hour or so.

I powered the system down and installed a network card. Got the OS error when trying to boot up again and it has not booted up since.

I installed the hard drive in another machine and it appears to be fine.

I've removed the memory sticks, the network card, the cd rom's, and everything I can think of to no avail.

Another thing worth mentioning, even though the hard drive is recognized in set up, when I boot the machine from a XP cd it say's there is no hard drive present.

Any ideas?

Since HP bought Compaq, maybe they tried some of the stuff Compaq did/does. That said, most people don't know that Compaq's BIOS was on the "D" drive, that was a partition of the primary hard drive. The "D" partition also had diagnostics and other stuff on it. If all this is true on your HP, the HP restore disc will probably save you. John C. (Not Garand)

Update: Now the system won't even recognize the hard drive at all.

I am beginning to think the mother board is shot.

have you tried using the secondary IDE port again or changed the IDE cable

Yep. I tried that, still no go.

I was going to take the hard drive out of one of my computers and see if it would recognize it but I think I'd better leave well enough alone before I find myself with two busted machines.

Seriously, the hard drive? I can't tell if you're kidding or not without the smiley faces.

If you are serious why did it work in another computer? Or did I not let it run long enough to fail?

try this. with the drive in the working machine run this from the prompt.

checkdsk (volume):/r

or

https://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287

This site has a list of hard drive manufactures utilities which will allow you to perform diagnostics from a bootable disk.

By chance did you check the power supply? Otherwise, if all this looks good, then i guess your motherboard maybe toast.

OK, Thanks. I'll give that a try later today.
