I run into this issue quite often on various NEC products, and to date it has never been the equipment. It takes a lot of time and patience to isolate this problem.

I generally start with voltage test of each line. I clip my butt set to the pair, attach a volt-ohm meter to the clips. I first measure on-hook voltage (I usually find anywhere between 45 - 52 volts DC). Then I measure off-hook voltage, usually 8 - 12 volts DC. I then make numerous test calls and simply wait and watch the volt ohm meter for a possible drop in line voltage during the call. Sometimes the drop occurs as long as 15 minutes into the call.

As recent as yesterday, I had a customer where the calls were dropping, however, the voltage remained steady. The call simply disappeared and dialtone was returned.

I called the local service provider, and was lucky enough to get a repair rep who had just taken a trouble call from a subscriber with the same issue. It turns out both troubles were occuring within the same CO.

Generally this problem crops up in our area during the hottest part of the summer. The LEC has deployed a number of Remote Digital Terminals, and SLC sites. With 109+ temperatures we have here, those cabinets get pretty toasty inside whereby certain cards begin to fail. One of the local techs likened it to turning electronic cards into "beef jerky". They just dry up internally from the ongoing extreme heat.

So, good luck... just be patient.

Can you duplicate the trouble? Let's not rule out the ID10T error, or, a feature related issue.
