This system suddenly began to flash buttons that were not in use, then it rung call on hold and intercom ring with no one on the system. After a reboot it got worse, flashing patterns of groups of stations. I bought a refurbed KSU, but it was doing the same things.
Is this really a KSU problem, or am I missing something?

Sounds like bad wiring somewhere to me...crushed line cord, bad jack, or possibly a set on the fritz.

Yep. This is a 25yr old system. Time to do some very basic troubleshooting. Unplug all stations and start to plug them in one by one.

The polarity of the two pairs to each station is imperative for proper operation. If the polarity of the data pair is reversed, it will cause erratic activity for the paired station. For example, if ext. 10 has a reversed pair, ext. 11 will act crazy, if ext. 13 has a reversed pair, then ext. 12 will act up, and so on. My guess is that you might have some field-made line cords in place that were incorrectly made and compensated for at the connecting blocks.

The term that I recall Vodavi using was that these are called "Sister" stations on the EX KSUs.
